Outreach Visit to Louisiana's Pointe - au - Chien Indian Tribe

Grace Grey (FOD) recently visited the Pointe-au-Chien Indian Tribe (PACIT) in Terrebonne Parish, LA. during their week of Culture Camp activities. The outreach visit was supported by the NOAA Gulf of Mexico Reginal Collaboration Team (GOMRCT), who is working with the PACIT on a NOAA climate and equity pilot project. Every year during Culture Camp, campers learn about their culture and heritage through activities like traditional dances, tribal songs in Indian French, Palmetto basket weaving, and boat rides that illustrate the adaptation of their ancestors to the changing landscape of south Louisiana. Grace teamed up with Hannah Lisney from NWS WFO Slidell to share information about NOAA with campers ranging in age from 8 to 14. Hannah talked about weather safety, and Grace shared information about measuring tides and currents, and how CO-OPS/OD will create tidal predictions for the tribe as part of the pilot project. There were plenty of hands-on activities, including using cloud charts, handling a variety of water level and current sensors, and installing a rain gauge.
